Goat Milk Share Information
What is a goat milk share?
It is an ownership of a part of a dairy goat. It is illegal in Virginia to sell raw milk, except for animal consumption. This allows you to benefit from the milk that the animal produces. While it’s illegal for you to buy raw goat milk, you can still drink milk from your own goat.
How does a goat share work?
Your goat, as a partial owner, needs care such as feeding, milking and occasional veterinary services (some vet bills may require other fees). I provide these services for you in exchange for a fee for boarding, feeding, milking and whatever other care your goat requires.
How much milk do I get from one goat milk share?
One share is about ½ a gallon per week. I have broken up the shares by about 1/14 of the goat’s production for the week, this depends on the goat’s production. The average lactation for a goat is 8 months out of the year. She is dried up for kidding season and the kids get the milk for the two months before we wean them. For this time during the winter you will receive preserved raw milk/milk products. During times your goat is not producing milk she still requires the same food and care, thus the weekly fee is still required to keep and care for your goat. This figure does not include the chance of sickness or stress, which sometimes affects the milk production. If you need more milk per week buy as many shares as you and your family needs.
How much does this cost?
The initial cost to buy one share of your goat is $50 per share. This is a onetime fee good for the life of your goat. Having purchased your goat you need someone to board it for you. The boarding fee is $10 per week for one share. The fee for the monthly period is due the first milk pickup day of the month (depending on which day of the week you are assigned.) If this is not paid on time, I do not have the funds to purchase feed for the month for your goat and you will not receive the milk for the following weeks of the month. The share will then return ownership to Falling Creek Ranch and Farms. We also require half gallon standard ball bottles to put your milk in. You can purchase those from us for $6 bottle deposit per share, this includes two half gallon ball jars to alternate. For pickups it is an additional $.50 per mile from the farm to your pick up destination.
What do I do to get started?
Please review all the information provided on goat milk shares, the contract and milk sanitation procedure. Sign the contract and make first your payment. Now you can start benefiting from your own dairy goat.
What if I do not need the goat milk?
If you want to forfeit your share contract, I ask that you give me at least two weeks notice to fill the share. We do not reimburse the share or bottle fee because of depreciation. Please be sure that you never sell your raw milk, it is illegal in Virginia.
